Barcelona, November 2024. Until November 28, 2024, Carmelo Zappulla, founder of External Reference — an international architecture studio based in Barcelona — presents “From Pattern to Matter”, an exhibition in collaboration with MANERA Magazine and Polestar Gallery, hosted at the Polestar Spaces of the Swedish 100% electric car company, which spotlight the most prominent local creators of the moment. In this exhibition, Zappulla explores the boundaries between product design and interior architecture, showcasing his most notable and inspiring design pieces in a reflection on the envelope as an interface that redefines our relationship with the spaces we inhabit.

“In the constant exploration of materiality, envelopes take on a new relevance in their connection with the ecosystem and the environment. These are no longer just surfaces but media for dialogue, where parametric design and new technologies combine to materialize innovative pieces,” says Carmelo Zappulla.

Recognized as a multidisciplinary designer with a unique creative and innovative approach, Zappulla integrates sustainability, design, and technology — values shared with Polestar — to transform spaces into emotional experiences.

In this context, 20 pieces from five works are on display, all produced using 3D printing technology with the expertise of LaMáquina. These pieces sit at the intersection of organic morphologies and new technologies, art and nature, and design and sustainability.
